Transcript of A Current Affair with Ray Martin, interviewing Russell the day after the Australian Premiere of Master and Commander.

Ray Martin: "During the making of Master and Commander Russell Crowe and the entire crew conducted a kind of war of their own. A mock version of the Rugby World Cup. Russell Crowe's back home now selling the movie, licking his wounds over the outcome of the real World Cup and feeling a bit nervous about impending fatherhood.

(Cut to clip of M&C)

RM: "If you had the choice between travelling around the world flogging this movie or watching the Pohms win the Rugby World Cup, which would you choose?"

Russell Crowe: "I'd travel around the world flogging the movie, mate! (laughs) I can't think of anything more devastating than watching the Pohms winning the World cup. I was actually in Hamburg - it was early on Saturday morning, Hamburg time, and we watched it with German commentary."

RM: "That'd be good." RC: "Yeah, it was interesting." (grins)

RM: "How's your German?"

RC: "You don't really need to be told what as goin' on - you could see everything, you know? I thought Australia did fantastically, getting to the finals, a magnificent achievement. And then, you know, getting into overtime, it was a really exciting game to watch."

RM: "Now this was an Australian movie, you've got you, an Australian director, an Australian cameraman, Australian musos, Australian scriptwriters. A bird tells me you were running around with the crew in an All Blacks jersey?"

RC: "Yeah.... (grins) well...em..... hello! On Sunday's we'd get together and play rugby. It was just unfortunate that the people playing in Wallabies jumpers didn't make.... didn't make that particular final of that particular competition. Then all the French guys came in - cause they all arrived for the final battle, you know? - about 300 French extras. And they put out a very
public challenge. And they said....um... you know.... 'We wanna play you guys in rugby. We've been hearing about your competitions' And so..."

RM: "Did you beat the Frogs?"

RC: (without missing a beat) "We killed 'em!" RM: "Killed 'em?" RC: "Absolutely!"

(Cut to clip of M&C)

RM: "Peter Weir said that he got to know Captain Jack better than he got to know Russell Crowe, so you were clearly into the role?"

RC: "Yeah... well... that's what you do. He might be over-dramatising that a little bit because I think Peter and I know each other pretty well, you know? Um... even from a distance we were very compatible on the set - we were very... eh.... complimentary."

(Cut to clip of M&C)

RM: "Do you get seasick?"

RC: "Oh..... before the movie - totally! All the time. Every time I went out on a boat basically. I always thought I was a really bad sailor. But I grew up in Sydney and Auckland and I've always been on boats, you know? So that was one of the things I was a little hesitant about with this film. (Russell puts on a funny voice) 'It's not going to be very good form if the Captain's continuously throwing up in front of the lower decks!'
But you just look at the horizon, breathe deeply, a little bit of accupressure..... perfeto!" (Italian accent and "pleased as punch look". LOL!)

RM: "As always, with you these days, there's talk of an Oscar but probably more talk about your violin playing?"

RC: "The most difficult thing I've ever done in a movie." RM: "Is it?"

RC: "Absolutely! and you can take tiger fights and helicopter stunts and everything else (giggles). It's such a delicate little thing, you know? And if you approach it with strength it will give you something great. But if you approach it with aggression you get nothing, absolutely nothing at all. So it's a really.... I mean... I would finish my violin practice and I'd feel light-headed and euphoric, and I used to think how special that this instrument could do this to you, you know? And then I realised it was actually because I wasn't breathing. (laughs) Because I'd get to the hard bits and I'd go... (Russell does a sharp intake of breath and makes a funny face in a comical impersonation). So I had to work out a system to breathe while playing the violin."

RM: (tongue-in-cheek): "Is it true that you can now play 'Glory Glory the South Sydney'?"

RC: "No I can't." (laughs) "Didn't come up on my list of songs to learn, you know?"

RM: "What can you play?"

RC: "My favourite song I played in front of the crew and stuff, it gets a very good reaction, was Waltzing Matilda. It used to go down very well."

RM: "Did you get a sense of, as I did watching the film, what it must be like being a member of the first fleet?"

RC: "Yeah... totally. I mean, you really begin to understand the courage that these men must have had."

(Cut to clip of M&C)

RC: "I mean we were doing it pretend - even though the movie is the complete idea. To do it for real in the time period, with the sort of food and preservatives that they were limited to and being away for two years at a time, sometimes more. Incredible strength of spirit for the people who did that."

RM: "Now you're home, you're free after this. I guess a beer's out of the question, is it?" (grins)

RC: "Ah.... at the moment..... yeah. I'm not
really free. I've only got a couple of days and then I start training for the next gig - or training more seriously for the next gig."

RM: "How long since you had a drink?"

RC: "I had a little drink after the Royal Premiere in London. The Officers met down below decks at The Dorchester...... code-word "galapagos". (grins)

RM: "But you've gone 64 or 66 days.....?"

RC: "Oh, that was about the 85th day before I had a beer then and.... em... I'm really enjoying it actually. You know, there's a sort of, a different viewpoint, (grins) that comes with it...... a bit of clarity......."

RM: "You haven't become boring, have you?" RC: "Sorry?"

RM: "You haven't become boring?"

RC: "Oh I don't think so at all. Not for the wife anyway!"

RM: "Will you wet the baby's head?"

RC: "Ah... maybe. I'm not sure.... you know. Probably if it's.... if I feel like it's the right thing to do... at the time. You know... I'm much more concerned about just meetin' the little fella and sayin' g'day and givin' him a cuddle and all that sorta stuff, rather than the celebration of it."

RM: "Are you anxious?"

RC:" I'm sure there's a good percentage of anxiety..... yeah. You know... I wanna make sure obviously that Dani's got everything she needs and she's safe and she's in the right situation for the birth and all that sorta stuff.... so a mixture of excitement and anxiety.... you know?"

RM: "Not true you're gonna call him Raymond?" (laughs)

RC: "I'm thinking about it.... thinking about it very heavily...... I mean.... you know..... I just actually got an e-mail last night from a guy that said 'have you thought of the name Raymond?' And then he says 'I know... I know... I'm an idiot.' And so I e-mailed him back and said 'actually...... quite frankly we had thought very seriously about Raymond......" (RC says this with a straight face)

RM: "You're kidding?"

RC: (continues from above) "........ no, that's not true. You
are an idiot!" (giggles).

RM: "Have a great birth."

RC: "Cheers mate."

RM: "Give our love to Danielle."

RC: "Cool."

RM: "And thanks for the evening."

RC: "Thanks mate."

Transcript of Russell's interview with Angela Bishop for Australian Channel 10 News, the day after the Australian Premiere of Master and Commander

Voiceover: "It (the Australian Premiere afterparty) all went on long into the night, but looking at him (Russell) today, you wouldn't know it."

Angela Bishop: "You're looking really well though. Obviously everything you're doing at the moment is agreeing with you - which I hear includes you're off the grog? Is that right?"

Russell Crowe: "Off the sauce for a while..... yeah, it's right. It's part of the preparation for the next film. But... you know..... it has multiple reasons...... Dani can't drink at the moment, so.... eh... seems a little unfair, you know?"

AB: "Good man!"

RC: "It's also.... travelling a lot and stuff like that, you know? and... eh...(laughs) it's funny, you know, because it came up recently. I just want her to know that wherever I am...... I'm... eh... at the very least... sober (giggle) if not still unconventional in thought."

Voiceover: "Russell was in London to attend a premiere of the film, hosted by Prince Charles."

RC: "It was funny to watch during the movie. He was
into it so much and he was like... (affected English voice)... 'oh.....oh my God...oh...' (Russell covers his eyes if showing Prince Charles being afraid to look). RC laughing. "And I was like, 'hey, that's Prince Charles!' you know?"

Voiceover: "This is his last committment to the film before he settles down to be a full time dad."

RC:" I'm a very lucky fella you know? Do you see how together my wife is, you know? I mean, she's making women all over the world completely jealous. See, she's put on 12 pounds and she's got 6 weeks to go. She is
so efficient, my girl."

Voiceover: "But as yet they haven't picked a name."

RC: "I don't think either of us want to bother being anxious about it, you know? Em..... we just want to meet him, say g'day and look in his eyes, you know?"
