B.App.Sci.(Chiro)

I obtained my chiropractic degree in 1987 from Victoria's R.M.I.T. University.

I have been in private practice in both Australia and New Zealand. During this time I have participated on Chiropractic Boards in a peer review capacity.

I have also been involved with a chiropractic college, working as a Clinical Supervisor at the college teaching clinic and as a member of several chiropractic associations, and I regularly attend seminars as part of my interest in ongoing education.

What Is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the second largest health profession in the world, and is a science based on the premise that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system and that interference with this system impairs normal function and lowers resistance to disease.

Interferences may be caused by structural distortions, particularly the spinal column - and chiropractors locate and correct these distortions.

What Education Do Chiropractors Obtain

A chiropractor takes 5 years of full-time study to complete the formal education at a tertiary institution leading to his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic. This degree enables him to be registered by State Government Authorities.

The intense 5 year course includes such subjects as : Anatomy, Histology, Neuroanatomy, Neurology, Psychology, Biochemistry, Chiropractic Techniques, X-Ray, Physiology, Diagnosis, Pathology, Orthopaedics and Nutrition.

In addition to these subjects, the chiropractic student has to spend over 2000 hours in special clinical training.

What is the Scope of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is not only of benefit for the "bad back" and extremity problems (i.e. knees, shoulders etc) but may be of benefit in many other internal (visceral) conditions such as headaches, asthma, migraines, constipation, menstrual problems, sinusitis to mention but a few.

How Can Chiropractic Help The Above Disorders

It must be remembered that the nerves from the spine go to every organ of the body. Your Doctor of Chiropractic knows exactly which part of the spine connects to each specific organ. If a vertebra is slightly displaced (which is very common and may produce no pain) is may pinch a spinal nerve, which will disturb the nerve impulses to the organ to which it connects. This will cause a disturbance in the organ's function and eventually produce disease in that organ.

By correcting misalignments (vertebral subluxations) in the spine, through the use of special manipulative techniques, called adjustments, the chiropractor is able to remove pressure on nerves. This means the return of normal nerve impulses to the organs and tissue.

Children and Chiropractic

Your children inherit many physical characteristics and traits from you including strengths and weaknesses of their spinal column.

"As The Twig Is Bent, So Grows The Tree".

It is recommended that you include regular spinal examinations in your children's health program.

Health Funds

A good percentage of the chiropractic fee is now claimable with extra-medical coverage, from most health funds. The exact percentage varies from fund to fund.

The Following Health Recommendations Are With The Compliments Of The Applecross Chiropractic Centre

  1. Set aside a special time each day for complete mental and physical relaxation. This is important in the restoration - as well as maintenance - of normal health.

  2. When sitting, choose a chair that has adequate firmness to hold your weight comfortably, and then sit straight. Avoid too soft, overstuffed chairs. Recliner chairs are acceptable if they are constructed so that when you are reclining your back is in a normal, straight position.

  3. Cross your legs only at the ankles, not at the knees. crossing your legs at the knees could aggravate an existing back condition as well as interfere with the circulation to the lower limbs.

  4. Be sure to get plenty of sleep to allow your body to recuperate and repair.

  5. Sleep on a firm Mattress, preferably one which is neither too hard nor too soft, but just firm enough to hold your body level while at the same time soft enough so that your shoulders, buttocks, etc will depress into the mattress.

  6. Your pillow should be neither too high nor too low. The ideal pillow is one which supports your head so that your neck vertebrae will be level with the rest of your spine. Avoid sleeping on two pillows; never lie on a couch with your head on the arm rest.

  7. Sleep on your back or on your side with your legs flexed slightly, not drawn up tightly. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. raise your head off the pillow when changing positions.

  8. Rise from your bed by turning on your side and swinging your legs off the bed, then push yourself into a sitting position with your arms, thus minimising the amount of strain on your back.

  9. Do not read or watch TV in bed, particularly with your head propped at a sharp or strained angle.

  10. Do not sleep sitting in a chair or in cramped quarters. Lie down in bed when it is time to sleep.
