Have you ever had to prepare a church service with a Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child, and wanted suitable music for it? If so you'll have noticed the shortage of hymns and songs. We think we can serve the whole church by improving this: so here's our Song Competition.

We are delighted that Rev'd Christopher Idle (of Jubilate Hymns fame) will judge the words. The music judge is a professional musician (who wishes to be anonymous) with wide experience in the music industry and a passion for all age services.

The rules are simple:

  • Song should relate primarily to a Thanksgiving Service (as in Common Worship).

  • Authors retain copyright.

  • The key criteria for "best words to an existing tune" will include comprehensibility to unchurched visitors (minimal jargon) and theological clarity. The author must declare which tune the words are intended to fit, and BI will seek copyright permission for the tune in question if needed.

  • The key criteria for "best new words and music" will include the above criteria for the words, accessibility by musicians (organist, pianist, guitarist or group at moderate levels of competence), and that the music should support the words.

  • Entries should be in writing on a page which excludes mention of the author's name(s), together with a covering letter declaring the author's name(s), to Roger Godin. Roger will forward entries to be judged, and will also answer any queries.

  • The decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Please tell the budding Wesleys and Kendricks in your church about this competition. We feel it's important to promote new talent.
