It's a small world! July 2000 Since arriving in Eccleshill, John and Shuna have discovered some connections with previous clergy. In 1967 John’s family moved to Ashton-under-Lyne and joined St Peter’s Church, which is where Rev’d David Sutcliffe had been before he came to Eccleshill. Although John’s family didn’t know the Sutcliffes, John’s mother recognised the name in Bishop David’s address - so she went and spoke to him personally during the refresments. They’ve discovered other connections as well. We’ll keep them secret for future issues. August 2000 Here’s another connection John and Shuna have discovered with previous clergy: When the Hartleys sent out their change-of-address letters, it emerged that Stephen Treasure is a distant relative. A lady called Mary lives in a little village outside Carlisle, very close to Eddie Stobart (of lorry-transport fame): she shares one grandparent with Shuna’s father, and another with Stephen’s father. Mary, a keen Christian herself with a long connection with Girl Guiding, was delighted to make the connection. September 2000 This month David Swales becomes the new vicar at St James’ Bolton. David was curate here at St Luke’s during the time when David Shreeve left and Stephen Treasure arrived. Before theological training, David worked at St George’s Crypt in Leeds (a shelter for tramps). This was during John’s time as a student at Leeds, and John spent some evenings as a volunteer at the Crypt. David then went to St John’s Durham for theological training, and John followed the next year. October 2000 If you look round our church building, you may notice the tapestry which hangs behind the side communion table in front of the organ pipes. It was designed by Bob Booth, a previous curate, who went to Australia after his time here. After a few years Bob returned from Australia, and took a job as vicar of Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent. Blurton is the next parish to Hanford, and John and Shuna knew him for a couple of years while their times overlapped. Welcome to Marise November 2000 We are pleased to announce that the Rev’d Marise Hargreaves is joining us as Curate from November 2nd. Marise was at theological college in Durham at the same time as John, and, after a career break, has served non-stipendiary curacies at St Clement (Barkerend Road) and St Paul Buttershaw (Wibsey). (“Non-stipendiary” means she didn’t get paid for these.) She will be moving to Hall Road once some work has been carried out there. Welcome to St Luke’s, Marise!
