Question.

Sidesmen not left on the side.

Q. When someone walks into a church, who is the first person they meet? Who is the person who can make them feel welcome, help them if they are nervous, give them the books they need, and find them someone to take care of them if they will be on their own?

Not the vicar! He's the last one they see. Not the organist or music group, or the "up-front" people - they are all sorting out and getting ready.

A. The sidesmen, of course. And we need people who can be the human face of the church when newcomers arrive. Is that what God is calling you to do? Welcoming is a special gift God has given some people, and maybe he's given it to you? If so, please sign up.

Sidesmen are appointed each year at the Annual Meeting. They join a rota and have a proper job description, which covers:
  - arrive early and put books out,
  - smile and welcome people,
  - give books out,
  - deal with crises at the back,
  - welcome latecomers,
  - keep order,
  - get the collection taken,
  - tidy the books afterwards,
  - deal with the collection.

We need sidesmen at all services, and we ask you to put your name on a list in the narthex, saying which services you can cover. There will be training provided. Sidesment are essential in our church, and we need God's people who can smile.

John Hartley
