Lord God, when I pray, help me remember that you want to listen to me, much more than I want to talk to you. Thank you that you delight to hear your children when we run into your presence, and help me to feel your loving arms around me as I come. After all, Jesus taught us to call you “Abba” - Daddy. Amen.

Almighty God, your kingdom is a perfect place, and I wish earth was like that as well. I wish we didn’t have wars and selfishness and all the other evils that people do - and I wish I wasn’t like that either. When I pray “your kingdom come”, help me grasp that it means “my kingdom go.” Help me to want to do things your way, not my own, and help me follow Jesus’ teachings. so that I can see you straightening out the things in my life and on my heart. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Thank you, Father, that in England I’ve got enough to live on, and a lot more than some folk elsewhere. Help me to see what Jesus said: life is more than things, and I should seek your kingdom first and trust you a bit more. Amen.

Eternal God, I am, of course, grown up, and I tell myself I ought to be able to handle the stresses and strains of life. When I get upset about pornography, it is because of the damage it does to others, not to me! Teach me the humility to admit my own weaknesses, use the armour which your Son provides, and not go where dangers lie. Amen.

All-knowing God, I like to think that if you had family, neighbours and colleagues like mine, you would have been a bit less idealistic about this forgiveness bit. Except, of course, you did - when you came to earth. Help me to put down my grudges, to want to forgive, to see things through other’s eyes instead of my own, and to have the courage to ask you to change my heart and to fill me with your love. Amen.

Which bit of Jesus’ prayer would you like to turn into a prayer of your own?
How do you put Jesus’ advice on prayer (Matthew 6:5-8) into practice?
Why pray when you can worry? Why worry when you can pray?
Have you learnt that your Father will give good gifts when you ask him?
