The Church Electoral Roll

The Electoral Roll is a list of people who are committed members of the church. Ideally it consists of all those who worship with us regularly and who follow Jesus in their personal lives.

What are the advantages of being on it? You can attend the Annual Parochial Church Meeting and speak and vote. You can stand for election for the PCC and the Deanery Synod, and serve as a sidesman. It gives you a voice in church affairs.

What is the commitment in being on it? The archbishops have issued a guide to this (see below): it means being active in practical Christianity and support of the church. This includes financial support. In Bradford, 12.5% of the Parish Share is based on Roll numbers, so it costs the church about £34 in Parish Share each time someone joins the Roll.

Duties of Church Membership

Many years ago the Archbishops of Canterbury and York issued this short guide to the duties of Church Membership:

"All baptised and confirmed members of the Church must play their full part in its life and witness. That you may fulfil this duty we call upon you to:
- follow the example of Christ in home and daily life and bear personal witness to him;
- be regular in private prayer day by day;
- read the bible carefully;
- come to church every Sunday;
- receive the Holy Communion faithfully and regularly;
- give personal service to Church, neighbours and community;
- uphold the standard of marriage entrusted by Christ to his Church;
- care that children are brought up to love and serve the Lord;
- give money for the work of the Parish and diocese and for the work of the church at home and overseas."

Should I be on the Electoral Roll?
  YES
if you are a committed Christian within the family of the church.
  NO if you don’t worship with us, or are “just looking” at Christianity or just exploring our church and haven’t decided on whether you want to be committed.

How do I join? Ask Evelyn for a declaration form and return it by 24th February.
