Looking at Jesus through Thomas
The Wayfarers are an ecumenical drama group who have been doing performances in churches in Bradford Diocese for the last 27 years. They number 14 people (performers and people to manage the technical side) aged from 9 to 75, and they have visited St Luke’s previously (about 12 years ago). Each year they take a passion play on a tour of churches in the diocese, and we have invited them to St Luke’s on the Tuesday of Holy Week. The evening will begin with a hymn, the presentation will last about an hour, and there will be refreshments afterwards. “Full Circle” tells the events of the last week of Jesus’ life, leading up to his death and resurrection. The account is as seen by Thomas, with all the doubts and questions in his mind; which we hear through the people who knew Thomas - Matthew, Ben, a woman caught in a compromising position, a woman who was there when Jesus entered Jerusalem and took the place by storm... The story is told in drama, dialogue, monologue, and some music, through a series of vignettes. Why should you come? Because we think you’ll find something to think about: a good film or drama or presentation has the power to stir the heart and set the mind onto new patterns of thought. It will be a good piece of professional drama to which you can invite your friends without any fear of cringe-factor. What does it cost, and why are they coming? The evening is free. The Wayfarers exist partly to say to the churches of the diocese: “You could do this too!”. So the staging is very simple, there are only about four or five lights, the costumes are not elaborate. It’s not a slick special-effects evening, but it is an evening for reflecting on the basics of the faith: Christ and him crucified. John Hartley
