Chris and Sophie Jelley and Oscar are our Link Missionaries in Uganda Christian University. Extracts from their letter last month...

Shifting in Africa

We ‘shifted’ (as they say in Africa) a month ago, moving into our new house after a seven-month wait. We now see monkeys in the trees, eat fresh vegetables from our new garden, and share our new home with friends old and new.

Chris is Director of University Computer Services here - a department which keeps shifting two steps forward and one back! He has been given the go-ahead to appoint more teaching staff, as IT skills are in such great demand: please pray the right people would be appointed. But in February the roof of the library (the newest building on campus) was declared unsafe, and Chris’s newly established computer lab became a building site! Please pray for the department to get off to a good start this term without too many disruptions or power cuts. Chris has just signed a deal for an “always on” internet connection for the university, which will improve access for students and staff.

Sophie enjoyed her small amount of teaching last term, but her responsibilities have now shifted as she has taken on the newly renovated University Guest House which caters for official visitors, many of them from overseas. Please pray for this ministry of hospitality, that UCU would be able to “entertain angels unawares!” (Hebrews 13:2).

Oscar is shifting rapidly through toddlerhood and is thriving in Uganda. He is proud of his “belly”, plays happily with his little friend Ivan (now much nearer), and delights in walking and riding round the room in laundry baskets. Recently ‘Grandma’ came to visit and tasted Matooke, soaked up sun, and saw the hair-raising driving!

Our perspectives seem to shift constantly - we get to see the needs of the people better and better. We recently me a little boy, younger than Oscar, who lives with his mum and another lady in one room, with little money, no refrigerator, and no toys. Pray that we would know what our response to such need should be.

Last month we also experienced shifting health - dysentery struck and fear gripped us as Oscar’s temperature soared, closely followed by ours. Praise God for the excellent health care we received in Kampala.

Finally, we have been given a gift - Jelley baby 2 is due in October. Love from us all,

Chris & Sophie Jelley
