More on the east window Following the “discovery” of the extra picture in our window (but some people knew about it all the time!), we asked the architect to cast his eye over it while visitng. Maybe it would be possible to move the wooden screen (“reredos”) by lowering it or cutting a piece out of it; or even to hinge it so that occasionally the window could be revealed ... but he begs us not to! The wooden carving is obviously real craftsmanship: it deserves at least 9 out of 10 for quality. To cut it would need an equally skilled craftsman, and the risks of damage to it would be quite large. Besides that, the proportions of the table and screen are obviously right for the present floor-levels, with the raised platform at the east end. By contrast, the glass of the east window is very faded, probably because of poor firing. The artwork is good, but the details have bleached out, and you’d probably only give it 5 out of 10 for quality now. You can see the contrast with the memorial window in the north wall, which has kept its colour much better. Another problem is that one of the apostles in the hidden part has been damaged, and his face is now a piece of blank yellow glass. All in all, much better to let sleeping dogs lie unless we were doing a major reordering with altered floor levels in the sanctuary. John Hartley
