The following article appeared in the November edition of "Cross and Crown", the parish magazine of the R E Lee Memorial Church, Lexington, Virginia, USA, as an account of remarks which were delivered by Frank Settle, a member of the Stewardship Committee, at the 8am and 10.30am services on 20th October 2002. Reflections on Stewardship I'd like for us to think together about our contributions to God's work as a parish community. Let's consider the following questions regarding our stewardship: Why do we give? What do we give? When do we give? Where do we give? How do we give? Why? We give in response to Christ's call to show God's love to others and to express our thanksgiving to the one who has given us all that we have. What? We give our time, our talents, and our money. These are our tangible responses to Christ's call. They get us involved in ministry. At this season of thanksgiving while we focus on money, we remain conscious of our other opportunities for giving. When? We are called to give continuously but especially at this time when we look ahead to next year's challenges and opportunities. Our pledges are critical to implementing a budget that supports the ongoing ministries and outreach of the parish. Where? As we consider the requests from many worthwhile charities, we remember that Christ's church that embodies God's love, the source of true giving, deserves first priority. How? This is the most important question of all. The answer is freely and joyously. Your contributions are not dues or assessments, they are expressions of your faith. Our attitude toward stewardship should reflect thanksgiving, joy, and a willingness to do our part. As you consider your pledge, prayerfully consider your answer to each of these questions. Ours answers will determine the future of this parish. I am confident these answers will lead to continued expansion of our mission to parishioners of all ages, to our local community, and to the wider world. Frank Settle
