Make them smile in Morrison's aisle!

For several years Christians from most of the local churches have gathered in Morrison’s Enterprise Five to sing Christmas Hymns on the Saturday before Christmas. A small brass band help us make a noise, and there is a banner to say who we are: Churches Together in North Bradford. This year the date is 21st December, and we’re beginning at 10.30am.

We hope people will appreciate live singing instead of piped music, that they will see the local churches are active, that they’ll think about coming to church at Christmas, and that if they need a listening ear they might find one (even if only briefly).

In previous years we’ve sung songs in the order of the Bethlehem Carol Sheet, but this year we’re going to try to arrange the hymns to tell the story more in sequence. And we’re also thinking of introducing a couple of new ones - or rather new words to secular Christmas tunes. See if you can guess the tune of this:

came to find a girl, Mary was her name;
came to give God’s word: news of God’s own Son.
He was coming to the world and Mary was his mum:
“Mary, hear, God is near, Jesus Christ will come:
He will be a little baby, you will be his mum, oh,
Mary, hear, God is near, Jesus Christ will come:
He will be a little baby, you will be his mum.”

Mary was afraid, wondered what she’d done?
“Don’t be frightened now, you’ve done nothing wrong.
Jesus will be great: Son of God Most High,
Saviour of the world, so God’s people never die.
    “Mary, hear...

Mary asked him “How?” Gabriel said “See:
When God’s Spirit comes, he will make it be.”
“Yes, sir!” Mary said, “I’ll do what you say,
I’ll look after Jesus when he’s born on Christmas day.”
    “Mary, hear...
