The hard sayings of Jesus

Churches Together
in North Bradford

Lent Course

Five Thursdays during Lent:
4th March to 1st April,
7.30-9.00pm at St James Bolton.

The puzzling things Jesus said about:

  • Born again and growing
  • Giving and self-emptying
  • Praying and forgiving
  • Telling others and loving
  • Entering God's kingdom by trust.

Each evening will include:

  • worship led by a different church each week,
  • a short talk (usually by one of the ministers),
  • discussion in groups,
  • a chance to respond, and
  • refreshments.

Jesus was the greatest teacher the world has ever seen. If we all did what he said a bit more than we do, then the world would be a happier place.

But Jesus also said a lot of things which are hard to understand. I think he deliberately said things which were hard to follow, so as to wind up his hearers and make them think. Take Luke 14:26 - he said "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother ... he cannot be my disciple". But Jesus does want us to love our parents (he says so in Mark 7:9-13) - so it must be that he is forcing us to ask ourselves what he really means?

Our Lent Course this year is all about these "hard sayings" which Jesus uttered. Each of the topics will be introduced by a short talk examining the range of what Jesus said on the subject and how we can start to make sense of it. Then it's over to the audience, with mixed groups so we can meet people across the denominations, focus on one or two bible passages, and hear each other's ideas. Unlike last year we won't be using tapes, and instead of a free-for-all feedback, there will be a chance to respond before coffee.

Everyone will be made very welcome, and we warmly invite you to join us.

John Hartley
