"Come to me," says Jesus Baptismal Integrity, a group I've belonged to for many years, is holding a competition for songwriters to write suitable hymns and songs for use in the service of Thanksgiving and Blessing for the Gift of a Child. "There are very few suitable hymns in the hymn book," writes Roger Godin, the chairman, "and on an occasion when lots of people turn up to church, maybe many of them not used to church services, we need to roll out the red carpet with good hymns set to singable tunes." I couldn't resist the challenge, particularly as we use the Thanksgiving service a great deal at St Luke's. So here's an attempt at a starter: the tune is the Eton Boating Song. It's a song which tries to express the invitation which Jesus gives when he takes children in his arms, puts a hands on them, and blesses them.
