Staffing Calverley Deanery
In last month's Link I wrote about the Calverley Deanery Pastoral Plan. This month it bites, as Rev'd Terry Collin retires from being Vicar of Greengates. It's likely that he won't be replaced with a full-time cleric. Our Rural Dean, Rev'd Paul Walker from Wrose, comes to preach on 10th October. He wants to take us through some of the issues. I won't second-guess what he'll say, but maybe I can provide some background information. So here's a sketch of our deanery. It's only approximate, but you probably wouldn't learn any more if it was exact. The boundaries don't make any real sense, except where they follow ancient landmarks such as the River Aire or Fagley Beck. Some parishes cover definite communities; others in the more crowded suburbs don't seem to have any real community identity. C of E Clergy are mostly allocated according to the population of the parish, but this is adjusted in rural areas. Curates are not placed according to populations. Except for Tong (which includes St James, St Christopher Holme Wood and St John Tong Street), the parishes have one church building each, and all have services every Sunday. If you only had 11 clergy, how would you deploy them? John Hartley
