My experience of Alpha Standing doing the ironing, my thoughts turn to the days left in the week. I seem to have plenty to cope with. That is - the usual chores and various commitments, and then Sunday will arrive before I am ready.
Ready for what? Sunday 12th December is Advent 3. The Communion service at 9.30am for me. I am looking forward to that. Then on Sunday evening it is the last meeting of the Alpha course, held in the narthex (the room at St Luke's under the gallery). There has been possibly an average of about 20 people attending each Sunday evening.
One God, many insights. John has made terrific efforts to provide interesting and varied input for us. He has invited other clerics and Ian to give talks and sometimes slides, illustrating the endless different aspects of the bible and Christian understanding. But there is always much more to learn. It is always fascinating to discuss and discover other people's perceptions of the bible's teachings, as well as their individual feelings. We have talked about many branches of Christian worship, and although we are not always sure of everyone's beliefs we always accept the people behind the beliefs.
Folk and food. I feel that however little or much one learns from an Alpha course, it is well worthwhile to be involved. The people who have met together have been consistent in attendance. It was good to see about six teenagers with us, and we hope they will continue to share their interest at St Luke's. Each evening we have had a meal together (which was all good stuff). Our thanks to Marie, Hilary and John, who have been vital contributors to the food. Most of the rest of us have cooked and transported dishes as well - a real team effort. All in all, a most enjoyable course and one which I've looked forward to each week. Jean Northrop
