Come to the theatre
The Lord of the Rings is a great book - a classic of its style, and a lot of people have read it. BUT a lot more have seen it at the cinema (or now on DVD in their own homes). And quite a lot of those who saw the film then went out and bought the book. A drama has a way of bringing things to life. That's why I invite you to join us on a church party to see these two productions. Both of these plays are based on Christian classics - and you really ought to read them yourself - but if you don't, you have a chance of seeing them acted. So come and join us. The Screwtape Letters is a series of imagined letters from a senior devil to a junior one, written by C S Lewis. The letters are full of advice about how to tempt a human being. Set in wartime England they deal with the man's falling in love, his becoming a Christian, and his being drafted to fight for his country. I better hadn't tell you how it ends. The Hiding Place is the true story of Corrie Ten Boom, a Dutch watchmaker, who took a hand in sheltering Jews during the Nazi occupation of Holland, and who was eventually caught and sent to Ravensbruch concentration camp, where her sister died. At the outset her Christian faith wasn't particularly a big part of her life, but through the events she finds that God becomes a more important factor - so much so that at the end ... oops, I better hadn't tell you that either. I haven't seen either of these dramas myself, and I haven't seen this particular company - but other clergy in Bradford Diocese have spoken very highly of it to me, and I think it will be excellent. At the beginning of this year I asked you to think about going to a Christian event during the year. How about going to this one? John Hartley
