Grow your life

The Tree

The seed falls in the earth:
planting a living tree.
So Lord, give me new birth,
embed your Holy Spirit firm in me.

The tiny shoots appear,
reaching towards the sun.
So Lord, drive out my fear:
with Christ within, I've strength to overcome.

    Just like a tree
planted by the water side, strong and free,
I shall not be moved if you abide in me.

The roots push through the soil,
seeking the moisture's flow.
So Lord, make me to toil
and learn your word of truth that I may grow.

The blossom blooms in spring:
colours emerge from green.
So Lord, help me to sing
your praises, so your glory might be seen.

    Just like a tree
planted by the water side, strong and free,
I shall not be moved if you abide in me.

The tree gives shade and space,
birds come and build a nest.
So Lord, give me your grace:
to bring your love to those who need your rest.

Tune: Darren Garfield & John Hartley.

Is Harvest about more than saying "thank you God" for our food, the choir singing and anthem, and us all having a church supper?

Yes, it is. Jesus used "harvest" to talk about a spiritual harvest in people's lives. He spoke about us being workers in God's field to help others come to him, and he said each of us needs to grow. He said God's kingdom growing in us is like a mustard seed, which starts off as the very tiniest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of all trees, and birds come and make their nests in its shelter. (Matt 13:31-2.)

Instead of our lives being empty space, we can be filled with God's love and peace and security. We can become a place of refuge and refreshment for others, so God can bless them.

Here's a song which tries to draw out the possible images Jesus intended when he spoke these words. You'll find a bit more background and the tune on our web site. Has God's kingdom taken root and grown in your life?

Come and join us for Harvest this year on September 25th. God wants each of us to think about how to grow our lives so we can be a blessing to others.
