The Ring-O-Bells Co-op?

Bradford’s Planning Department have received an application to demolish the public house at the Ring O Bells (289 Harrogate Road BD2 3RQ), and “construct a convenience store with associated access, car parking, servicing area and landscaping”. The application (no. 06/03534/FUL) can be inspected at the Jacob’s Well offices.

Roughly speaking, the idea is to build a new single-storey Co-op store backing onto Pullan Avenue and facing towards the veterinary surgery. As the site is on a slight slope there would be steps up from the pavement, but also ramped access by going round a flower bed in front of the entrance. There would be parking for 15 cars between the store and the adjoining houses, reached from Harrogate Road. Lorries would drive in from Harrogate Road, but there would also be a lorry-exit (with a barrier) to Pullan Avenue from the delivery area.

There’s no mention of the sale of alcohol, as that is not a planning matter but a licensing issue. There would be boarded fencing to try to reduce noise impact on houses.

The plans make interesting reading. They say the area lacks this type of store, or anywhere to build one, for 500m in any direction. As well as bringing in up to £1m per year, they say the store would improve the area. And I must admit that I agree - I’d far rather have a Co-op than another pub or restaurant. So I intend writing in to support the plans. Perhaps we should open a cafe for the shoppers?
