Buildings, buildings This is my first opportunity to write in the magazine a note of thanks to those who chose the colour-schemes for the decoration of the narthex (that’s the glassed-in area under the gallery at the back of our church). Especially we thank those who helped it happen on a practical level. It looks lovely and we are very pleased with the whole effect.
How did the money work out? It’s always difficult to set down the money exactly because of other work which gets done at the same time and extra costs for contingencies, but here is the breakdown to the best of our ability:
You’ll recall that in last month’s magazine we asked for gifts of £2,400 at our Gift Day. This figure was explained in some details in the notice sheets, and we asked people to pray and give towards this amount. What an answer to prayer! Your suggestions for spending the last £21 are NOT needed at the moment. Read on ...
What about the furniture? At the moment we are trying different layouts of the narthex, and not putting the piano, TV cabinet, and large table back just yet. We do need notice-board space, but the lack of clutter and the visual effect of clear walls has been quite pleasing, and we might well decide to use the space differently, perhaps with pictures and more lightweight items. This will be a PCC decision.
Other work. The ‘Quinquennial’ (five-yearly) Inspection work is nearly finished. There are some repairs to be done on the main roof and over the choir vestry, and the ceiling supports may need anchoring. We need some cross-bonding work on the electrical system, and the Architect has warned that the wiring is nearing its sell-by date. He’s also made a pointed remark about planning for reroofing the main roof before too much longer. The pump on the gas boiler has given trouble, and we should think about a device which senses the outside temperature and calculates when to put the heating on - so we’d use less gas after a cool night than after a bitterly cold one. And we need wider-diameter rainwater pipes. And some protection for the ventilation holes. In fact, I think I’ll need a strong cup of tea while I read the report, when it finally comes! John Hartley
