Affirmations of faith

Christmas (from Hebrews 1:2-3)

Let us declare our faith in Jesus the Son of God.
We believe in God, who in these last days
has spoken to us by his Son.
We believe the Son is the heir of all things,
through whom God made the universe;
he is the radiance of God's glory,
the exact representation of God's being,
and he sustains all things by his word.
He provided purification for sins,
and sits at the right hand of God's majesty.
He is superior to angels,
and we look for his coming in glory. Amen.

John Hartley

Epiphany / New Year (from 2 Corinthians 1:20-22)

All God's promises are "yes" in Christ:
It is Christ to whom we belong.
It is the Father who makes us stand firm,
and anoints us for service.
It is the Spirit by whom we are sealed
in love for evermore.
We believe in one God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

John Hartley

Epiphany / Baptism of Christ (from 1 Corinthians 8:6 & 12:13)

There is one God and Father:
from whom all things came,
and for whom we live.

There is one Lord, Jesus Christ:
through whom all things came,
and through whom we live.

There is one Holy Spirit:
in whom we are baptized into one body,
and of whom we drink.

We believe and trust in one God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

John Hartley

Easter (from 1 Corinthians 15:1-5)

Let us declare our faith in Christ.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ
who died for our sins as foretold in scripture,
was buried,
and was raised to life on the third day;
who appeared to his first followers,
and called us to his service.
We have taken our stand on this gospel,
and by it we are saved.

This is the faith of the church.
This is our faith.
We believe in one God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Easter (from 1 Corinthians 15:14, 20-27 & 49)

If Christ has not been raised,
then our preaching is futile and so is your faith.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
We believe in God the Father
who has put everything under Christ's feet.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God the Son,
who has destroyed all dominion and power.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit
who gives us the likeness of the man from heaven.

This is the faith of the church.
This is our faith.
We believe in one God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

John Hartley

Easter (from John 14:1,10-14)

Jesus said: “Trust in God, trust also
in me”. So let us declare our trust.
We trust in God the Father,
who has been revealed by Jesus.
We trust in God the Son,
on the evidence of his miracles:
He is Jesus, the Christ,
who brings us the Father’s words.
We trust in God the Holy Spirit,
who lives with us and in us:
the presence of Jesus, come to us.

Jesus said: “Ask in my name, and I
will do it”. So let us pray in confidence.
Lord Jesus, we believe and trust
that you are in your Father, and we
are in you, and you are in us.

Easter (from John 20:19-29)

Let us declare our faith in God.
We believe in God the Father,
the creator, and the giver of peace,
who sent his Son into the world.
    We believe in Jesus Christ,
who was sent by the Father
to give peace to mankind.
He was crucified for our sins,
but was raised to life on the third day,
and seen by his apostles.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
given by Jesus to his disciples.
We believe that Jesus sends us,
to proclaim the forgiveness of sins.

John Hartley

Easter (from Acts 10:34-42)

Let us declare our faith in God.
    We believe in God
who accepts from every nation
people who respect him
and do what is right.
We believe in his Son Jesus Christ,
who brings the good news of peace,
who went around doing good,
and who healed many people.
    He was killed by crucifixion,
but God raised him from the dead
and caused him to be seen by many.
He commanded us to preach of him,
for he will judge both living and dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit
with whom God anointed Jesus,
and who fills those who believe.

This is the faith of the church.
    This is our faith.
We believe and trust in one God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

John Hartley

Pentecost (from Ephesians 4:1-16)

Let us declare our faith in God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe in one God and Father of us all,
who is over all and through all and in all.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
head of his body the Church,
in whom we grow up to maturity.
We believe in one Spirit of God,
who unites us in the bond of peace.
He gives us each his gifts of grace:
to prepare us for works of service,
to defend us from error,
and to build us up in one body,
united in love.

Let us be humble and gentle,
patient and bearing with one another in love.
For in one baptism
we have one hope and one faith. Amen.

John Hartley

Ordinary Time (from Galatians 2:16 & 20)

A person is not justified by observing the law,
but by faith in Jesus Christ.
So we too
have put our faith in Christ Jesus,
that we may be justified by faith in Christ,
and not by observing the law;
because no-one will be justified by observing the law.

We have been crucified with Christ,
and no longer live but Christ lives in us.
The life we live in the body,
we live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved us and gave himself for us.

John Hartley

Ordinary Time (from Acts 15:7-11)

Let us declare our faith, as expressed
by the apostles of the early church.

We believe in God the Father,
who knows the heart,
and accepts both Jews and Gentiles;
who chooses that all people
should hear the gospel and believe.
We believe in Jesus Christ,
through whose grace we are saved,
just as are all those who believe.
We believe in the Holy Spirit
whom God gives to all who believe
without distinction,
purifying our hearts by faith.

Let us then not test our God, for no-one
can be justified by obeying the law.

Let us put no burdens on other believers,
except for trust in one God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

John Hartley

Ordinary Time (from Romans 8)

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set us free from the law of sin and death.

If we live by sin, we shall die,
but if we live by the Spirit of God, we are sons of God.

Neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation
can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

John Hartley

Ordinary Time (from Acts 17:24-31):

We believe in God
who gives life and breath to us all,
who created us all of one nature,
who determined our times and places,
that we might seek and find him,
who is not far from any of us.

We believe in his Son, Jesus Christ,
through whom he will judge us all,
whom he has raised from the dead.

We believe in his Holy Spirit,
who brings us to repentance,
who inspires our hearts,
and through whom we draw close to our God. Amen.

John Hartley
