Carey: Heaven can wait

George Carey

Fan ... Archbishop Dr George Carey

By STEWART WHITTINGHAM

THE footie-mad Archbishop of Canterbury has given his blessing for vicars to change the times for services this Sunday — to avoid clashing with England’s first World Cup game.

Arsenal fan Dr George Carey gave the go-ahead after fears some church-goers would watch Sven’s boys play Sweden at 10.30am instead of joining the congregation.

Dr Carey, 66, said: “Worship must always come first — but we can afford to be flexible.” Decisions to move services will be made locally by vicars. Many will now hold them before or after the Group F clash.

Others are doing even more to get in the mood. The Rev John Hartley of St Luke’s in Eccleshill, West Yorks, has put his service back to 3pm, entitled it “Make Jesus the Centre Forwards of Your Life” and invited fans to turn up in their soccer shirts.

He has even composed a special hymn to be sung to the Match of the Day tune.

The Rev Rick Fillingham is moving his service at Ecclesall Parish Church in Sheffield, to 9.15am, has hired a giant screen for his vicarage lawn and applied for a drinks licence. He joked: “We may need to keep praying during the game!”

And the Rev Richard Kellett will end his 9.30am service at St Andrew’s in Skegby, Notts, with a giant screen in front of the altar.
