Press Release: for immediate use Aaaugh ... Don't sing that, Vicar! The vicar of Eccleshill is offering his congregation the chance NOT to hear various "hymns" he has written to well-known tunes, at a Sponsored Sing at St Luke's Eccleshill on Saturday morning, 7th June. Over the last few years his numbers include a hymn for the World Cup (tune: Match of the Day), one on whether the risen Jesus was a ghost (tune: Scooby Doo), and one about Christians receiving the Holy Spirit (tune: I'm a little tea-pot). He has also written carols to "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer", and a donkey-riding song for Palm Sunday. "I think the congregation may be getting tired of my rhyming rubbish", said Rev'd John Hartley, the singing and playing vicar who appeared on TV last summer, "but will they part with money to make me stop?" The event, during a church coffee morning, also gives the chance for people to sponsor singers, and to request their favourite hymns. Reactions from the congregation vary. "I think John missed his vocation. He ought to have been on stage," says Audrey. Jim agrees: "On stage ... sweeping up!" Further details: Rev'd John Hartley, 01274 636403
