Alabaster
Sculpture
|
"Bound By Earth" was
the first sculpure in my flight series. Created from
alabaster, the sculpture implies that the eagle has not yet
taken flight. Its wings appear to be bound to its body and
to the earth. The position of the eagle demonstrates its
contemplation of flight, unsure where to go, just as a
person may contemplate their future.

"Transcendence"
demonstrates the eagles path in flight. I have been told
that this form reminds one of a human figure. This sculpture
shows the simplistic elegance of the bird form as it ascends
higher and higher in the sky. It's as if it has achieved a
great success and is flying in celebration. (Sold -

"Internal Reflections"
drastically simplifies the eagle form giving way to its
central force...the symbol of an eagle in flight. The bird
form contains a void in the center...that void will only be
filled in the freedom of flight. (Sold - "Where Art Thou

"The Struggle" was
created through a grant that I was awarded through Central
Connecticut State University. The grant participants had to
create a sculpture on a large scale. During the summer of
1996, I was still in pursuit of my theme of flight. Working
on such a large scale with alabaster was a challenge,
therefore I decided to include other materials such as birch
tree limbs, stainless steel, cement, and bark mulch. This
sculpure demonstrates a struggle within the stone piece as
if the eagle is trying to break out. The eagle is simply
represented through the negative space created in the
interior. The image is an inverted head of an
eagle.

"Swift Descent"
epitomizes an eagle in flight, actually in the fastest
flight in which it engages, it's descent to catch it's prey.
In working with stone creating the illusion of flight is
difficult, obviously because the stone has so much weight. I
used a Plexiglas rod for support of this form because it
would help to give the illusion that the bird form was in
flight with less distraction. This sculpture is one of my
personal favorites as it captures the essence of flight.

"Departure" represents
the eagle's path as it is in the process of taking flight.
This sculpture contains one of the largest and most
beautifully veined stones of all the alabaster
used.
