The World of Connor Riley

So who is this kid, anyways?

A Brief Bio: The College Years

I'm Connor, I'm 23 and I currently live in Bellingham, WA, but I will soon be moving to Seattle.

I'm taking a little time off from WWU where I was majoring in Recreation. Right now I am working horrible temp jobs to pay the rent, and pray every day that I will get hired by a place I really want to work.

I was born and raised in the very unexciting town of Auburn, WA. Auburn's an industrial town with lots of mullets and trailer parks. Not a great place for a queer kid to grow up. My highschool days were spent playing sports and doing jazz band.

I was really excited to leave Auburn for Bellingham, WA to attend WWU. Finally I had the chance to be "out", and be in an accepting enviroment. I started making friends with queer kids and taking the classes offered in the GLBT minor(history, english, education, mentoring) and stuff was going pretty good for me.

I also got to continue with my music, studying privately with one of the professors and got to be in band and jazz band. And I continued to be active in sports as well, but instead of being an athelete I was the coach..I started coaching girls basketball and fastpitch, and realized that I loved working with kids and coaching..that was the love that gave me the start to work at camps and youth programs, and is why I chose to major in Recreation. Coming into college I also started to become more involved in the Christian community. I started going to the INN, a campus ministry..I went on a couple of mission trips to LA to work in homeless shelters and to Florida to work for Habitat for Humanity.

I decided to combine my love of God and working with kids and become a middle school Young Life leader. Little did I know that they actually had a rule in the contract that you couldn't be queer! The director and I had a talk for about three hours about my life, and why homosexuality was wrong. It was kind of crazy that I had never had issues with my christianity and my homosexuality until then, but after that conversation my world was turned upside down for a good few months. Luckily some people helped me out, and taught me about the true meanings behind the passages that condemned homosexuality, and things got a lot better.

My college experience has been/still is just amazing. I don't think that I could be anymore content with my life than I am right now. I am amazed every day by the people that surround me in my daily life. I am in a major that I completely love, and I am in a place where I can be completely myself, as well as given the freedom to totally discover who I am.

Here's my buddy Shey and I demonstrating what we really do durring finals week.
